잉글랜드 Leeds 출생. 철도 회사의 직원으로 근무하면서 그림공부를 시작했다.
많은 작품을 남긴 화가로서, 달빛과 전등 빛에 비친 풍경을 아름답게 표현한 작품으로 유명하다.
1867년 <Spirit of the Night>에서처럼 세밀한 묘사와 인물을 밝게 비추는 채색으로 요정의 모습을 그렸다.
Degas처럼 초기에는 작품 완성을 위한 분석틀로서 사진을 이용했다.
그는 주로 개인 후원자를 위해 작품 활동을 했고, 때때로 작품이 너무 인기가 있어 복제본이 나돌기도 했다.
